Dick and Betsy DeVos no doubt received quite a lot of attention for their political contributions. However, that pales in comparison to the amount that they have given to charity. According to data that they recently made public, their donations over their lifetime have reached almost $139 million. The DeVos’ give more to charity than to politics. For instance, they gave away approximately $11.6 million to charitable courses. That amount is double the $5.3 million in campaign donations that they have made in the last five years. The couple is part of the larger DeVos family that is renowned in Republican circles for their donations to the party. The DeVos family gave over $104 million to charity in 2015, which earned it recognition from Forbes.

They Prioritize Education, Arts & Culture

According to data from the DeVos family, Forbes estimates that it has given away almost a quarter of its $5.2 billion fortune to charitable courses. For Dick and Betsy, they have prioritized education. In 2015, they gave more than $3 million to educational causes. Besides that, they awarded over 3 percent of their donations to groups that are calling for reforms in the education sector. Their second biggest area of focus is Arts & Culture. It represented over 21 percent of their charitable donations in 2015. Before that, they had donated $22 million towards the launch of an arts management institute at the University of Maryland.

It is All about Transparency

The family spokesman said that the new release of information represents the DeVos family’s effort to be more transparent. He also added the revelation would have gone ahead whether or not Betsy had received the nomination for secretary of education. DeVos emphasized that most of their donations were aimed at helping people and not merely political donations trying to advocate for a certain agenda.

Dick DeVos’ Work and Personal History

Dick DeVos is the co-founder of Amway Corporation. He is the eldest son of Richard DeVos Sr. The Amway Corporation sells its household, personal, and health products through a network of dealers. Dick DeVos began his career at Amway Corporation in 1974. In 1984, Dick DeVos rose to the position of VP of the company that has operations in 18 countries. In 1989, he started Windquest Group, a firm that was involved in the manufacture of closet and storage organizers.

In 1991, his father put him in charge of the Orlando Magic Basketball franchise, owned by the DeVos family. After a two-year stint, he went back to Amway Corporation as the president. He played a crucial role in the restructuring of the company. After that, he left the firm to work at Windquest Group as the company’s President. He has since helped grow the company globally and expand its operations.
